For 4 months, six youth ages 9-17 prepared by attending multiple community forums on violence, researching the effects of poverty and violence on community, learning public speaking techniques, in order to present at a Fairfax County Budget Hearing. Through their voices, local government officials were moved start listening to youth and their ideas. The youth eventually were offered jobs with the county to assess all county prevention programs, improve current initiatives, develop new initiatives, and implement creative new ways to decrease street violence. The Youth Worker Initiative is still operating in Fairfax County. This is one way to change community together. It will take courage, lots of patience and tons of commitment. YOUTH voices must be heard!
