The Gathering For Justice

Whats up Gathering family?

I have much to share about the time in Chicago and Erie over the past three weeks but I would like to start by thanking everyone for making these events a success. We accomplished a great deal and yet we have far more to go before we change the culture of of our country. I speak of a culture of violence. I am speaking of a culture that rather throw away our youth than to teach them how to be successful. I speak of a culture that does not agree in practice with this statement by Fredrick Douglas," it is easier to raise a strong child than to fix a broken man." Maybe we agree with this statement but our country invests all of our tax dollars into the so called rehabilitation of broken men and women through punishment.

I want to thank Justin Richardson for his great sacrifice to attempt on organizing the most violent city in our country. Justin has had the daunting task of facilitating open lines of communication in a community that is truly suffering from the death of so many all the time. While in Chicago the Gathering conducted a week long youth Kingian Nonviolence T-O-T for North Lawndale College Prep Academy who is committed to supporting the Gathering Coalition in every way possible. Throughout the City this school is known for their direct approach of handling their school problems nonviolently and they have pledge their support to the Chicago Coalition. We are making the right connections and the momentum is growing. I also want to thank League of Young Voters, SWYC, St. Sabina & Safety Networks, Simba, and SIMSA for meeting with us so that we can truly create active connectivity between organizational actions and event's in Chicago. More People! More Power!! More Progress!!!

I want to take this time to thank the Erie Coalition lead by Curtis Jones and Ben Wilson for extending such a warm welcome to the Gathering. The City of Erie truly embraces the concept, spirit, and strategy of the Gathering. Throughout all of my travels the collaborative effort of the City, local churches, human services and and the schools is matched by none. Curtis Jones and the Erie coalition are working on faith for one goal and that is to save their youth. While in Erie the Gathering participated/conducted a concert in the park, (youth and adult) morning and evening Kingian nonviolence workshops and training, men/women talking circles, youth game night and had the local professional baseball team support the event by announcing the Gathering for Justice and Abundant Life Church facilitation of the Nonviolence Summer over the intercom and the electronic score board during all three games that week. Special Thanks to Brother D, Brother Rosco, Brother Rob, Brother Fred, and Pastor Gains for for supporting the Gathering's mission and me personally.

I will be posting much more in days to come please call or send an email of support to Justin or Curtis for the work that they are doing.

About

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
