This past week the Gathering was invited to North Lawndale College Prep High School in Chicago to conduct a youth Kingian nonviolence trainer of trainers program. The school intents for the participants of the program to be the change they want to see in Chicago. Also participating in the training, Dr. Bernard Lafayette and David Jehnsen both the authors of the Kingian nonviolence manual/curriculum that was created biased on the two gentlemen's experience working in the Civil Rights movement during the 50's & 60's, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King's example, speeches, and writings. dr. Lafayette's last conversation with Dr. King was around the idea to institutionalize Nonviolence education in all level's of society and education systems. Dr. King believed if the youth were exposed to the philosophy and strategy of nonviolence at and early age they would be more equiped to address the conflict in their lives. This effort would also create a culture of nonviolence direct action.
NLCP High School is located in an under resourced West Side community whose residents, similar to many under resourced communities in our nation, are constantly dealing with a culture of violence in their streets, homes, and schools. The North Lawndale College Prep High School family is seeking to find innovative, proactive strategies to engage their students and staff in becoming the leaders that will change the culture of violence within their school and their surrounding community.
The Gathering conducted the youth training in a class room setting for five straight days from 9:00am-5:00pm. The first 2 and half days of training were instruction and the last 2 and a half days were practicing presenting the curriculum.
We discussed all types of topics surrounding the violence in their community. This the same community where there were 7 murders in 24 hours during the same week the Gathering was there to create a culture of of peace. The following is a clip from and article that describes the recent violence, By Associated Press June 1, 2009 4:48 pm
Chicago had seven shooting deaths in 24 hours this weekend, and police say they have no suspects in custody.
All seven victims were men in their 20s or 30s, and all were shot to death.
The shootings occurred between 6:15 a.m. Saturday and just before 6 a.m. Sunday.
One victim, 30-year-old Demond Stansbury, was shot along with two of his cousins, who survived and are in fair condition.
The shootings spanned the city, happening on the North, South and West sides.
Chicago Police spokesman Roderick Drew says investigations into the shootings are ongoing.

Upon completion of the training program the students received their certificates and went home for the weekend. This same group of students returned on Monday to plan on how they would present to the entire incoming freshmen class and the parents and relatives, because with in 24 hrs. they would all be arriving for their class orientation and the game would begin with no more time to practice. The Gathering Staff and CJ from the League of Young Voters were in attendance for support and to evaluate their performance.
The students were presenting for the very first time and were able to present the material in a way that 9th graders were able to understand and feel comfortable enough to participate in the discussion. In 9 days North Lawndale was able to produce 25 Kingian Nonviolence educators and share the message and what they learned with 200 more community members and youth leaders. The Gathering for Justice thanks you for doing your part and becoming the change we all want to see in the globe.
