A different study, published last year in the journal International Security, used an expanded database and analyzed 323 major insurrections in support of self-determination and democratic rule since 1900. It found that violent resistance was successful only 26 percent of the time, whereas nonviolent campaigns had a 53 percent success rate.…

What's up family,
So today I find myself sitting on Kazu Haga's couch getting ready to attend an on the ground 3 day organizing training conducted by the Center for Third World Organizing from November 20-22, 2009. I have a great deal of understanding when it comes to the nonviolence philosophy but when it comes to on the ground organizing skills I need help. The Gathering staff agreed that each of us need to get training on different areas of our work. We agreed that even the trainers need tra…

I was trying to come up with a inspirational title and topic for this blog and I finally decided to just write about my day. Then I thought how, so often, I set out to write this amazing blog and I never get to write it because I become exhausted thinking about the task and which topic should I pick and how should I present my thoughts. I am going to share some the thoughts that I was having as a read today. Please join in the Gatherings experiment with Nonviolence.
In my attempt to keep learni…

In September, 1971, several incarcerated men at Attica Prison led an uprising to protest inhumane treatment and overcrowding. After four days of negotiation state troopers were called in and the Attica Prison rebellion ended with nine hostages and twenty-eight incarcerated men dead. The insurrection changed the entire dynamic within prisons and initiated a national discussion about prison policy and practices. New York State prisons had very few programs at that time. Friends (Quaker) worship gr…

SACRAMENTO, California - The riot that ravaged a Southern California prison and injured 175 inmates began with a fight between black and Hispanic gang members, a stark reminder of the difficulty of race relations behind bars and the challenges of desegregating inmates.
In America's largest state prison system, black, Hispanic, Asian and white gangs generally don't mix. When they do, trouble typically follows.
"It isn't that everybody in the inmate popu…

Police chief ignores wave of thefts
Published: July 31. 2009 1:06AM
This letter is for Erie Police Chief Steve Franklin.
Our family home -- in a quiet, beautifully maintained, modest neighborhood -- was burglarized, apparently, in broad daylight. The 56-inch LED flat-screen TV, a vintage electronic keyboard synthesizer, a DVR and a registered shotgun were all taken, and the bedrooms ransacked. My appeal to friends and colleagues turned up similar declarations that they've "been there" or "it…

Speaking in the Blue Room in City Hall to announce a new finance commissioner, Mr. Bloomberg was asked if the program simply shifts the homelessness program to a different place, as…

Whats up Gathering family?
I have much to share about the time in Chicago and Erie over the past three weeks but I would like to start by thanking everyone for making these events a success. We accomplished a great deal and yet we have far more to go before we change the culture of of our country. I speak of a culture of violence. I am speaking of a culture that rather throw away our youth than to teach them how to be successful. I speak of a culture that does not agree in practice with this st…
