RE: Eyes on the Prize: Program Architecture of Emerald Cities
This memo offers suggestions on program architecture for a national effort to build “emerald”
cities, our shorthand for high-road cities committed to greening their economies in equitable and
democratically accountable ways.1
As background to these suggestions, we take the argument for the desirability and viability of
high-road as against low-r…

This weekend The Gathering for Justice was hosted by The Hoover Methodist Church and their Family Conference Weekend. It was a beautiful event. Jonathan completed a 2 day core, Cj, from the league of young voters, Elandria from highlander also did trainings with the community. Carmen and Ari (a local gathering leader in little rock) are setting the stage for a black brown conversation. The was a lot for ground laid. I want to give it up to Malik, Will Young and Tafara for putting together such a…

I had the pleasure of joining a couple of our Gathering leaders in Rhode Island for the nonviolence summer institute. Congratulations to Justin Richardson who received his level two certificate in nonviolence focusing on the organizing and mobilization of communities, and Kazu Haga is now a certified Kingian nonviolence trainer.
When I walked into the Institute I was overwhelmed by the love and spirit in the room. The attendees were diverse in age and race. Love force is the only thing that can…

Over the past month we have seen citizens in countries through out the world take to the streets to demand freedom and democracy. We have been watching the people of Iran and Honduras stand up and have seen the horrible retaliation of governments no longer accountable to their people. As a believer in people’s movement and as an organizer for justice I have been stimulated by these actions and intrigued by the use of technology to organize and to educate the world.
In following these movements,…

The value of mentorship
On May the 5th 2003 Water Sisulu died, leaving behind a grieving nation and a heartbroken Nelson Mandela. Sisulu was Mandela's earliest political mentor and his closest confidant, and after 62 years of friendship the two were separated.
Mandela first met with Sisulu in 1941, after being referred to his house in Soweto by mutual friends, who saw what the older Sisulu could offer a hungry and ambitious Mandela. Sisulu later said that the moment he looked upon the young ma…

This weekend I watched a documentary on the Children's March in Birmingham and it brought me to tears. Not because of the hoses or the dogs or the tank rolling through the streets. What evoked such emotion was the footage of these young people smiling and singing while being arrested. The youngest boy arrested was 4, and when he was asked what he was doing there he said "teedom".
How did this happen, how did thousands of young people and a popular DJ named "the playboy" organize and mobilize eno…

Some of us may know Van Jones from the Ella Baker Center. Here is an article about what his appointment could mean for us on the ground. In conversations with many of you, there seems to be an understanding that we must show movement on the ground to support the people in the white house who are progressives and have the power to push for that change. Mr. B always reminds us of the story of FDR and A. Phillip Randolph, when he told Randolph to go out there and make him do it. It took years of ne…

After the watershed year of 2008, The Gathering returned in January with the tragic news of the murder of Oscar Grant. Oscar, a 22 year old African American male, was brutally and unlawfully gunned down at a BART station in Oakland on New Year’s morning. As we mourned this atrocity and called upon the City of Oakland to investigate, our Gathering family in Oakland asked the Council to come to California. The community coalesced around the massacre and The Gathering was asked to help organize the…

Young people make up almost a fifth of the world’s population. Close to 85% of the 1.1 billion young men and women between the ages of 15 and 24 live in developing countries. Rapid population growth, the unavailability of housing and support services, poverty, unemployment and underemployment…

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 21 (IPS) - As the United Nations readies for a key climate change meeting in Poland next month, a London-based human rights group warns that any new deal on global warming would be seriously compromised if the most vulnerable groups, specifically indigenous peoples, are shut out of the negotiations.
"The entire U.N. process will be flawed if communities…

Hey Gathering Family! I wanted to take a minute to recognize all the work we did together in 2008. It was an amazing year. To think that it was only a year ago that we met in Oakland to commit ourselves to one another and to dedicate ourselves to building a nonviolent movement.
This year was a year of training and relationship building for The Gathering. We deepened our understanding in nonviolence and honed in on local campaigns and built a website that allows us to get to know one another, ex…

The Gathering for Justice is a nonpartisan organization. Although we can not endorse any candidates, we understand that our vote is a radical act of nonviolence and must be used as we build our communities. It will call upon elected officials to respond to our demands. Below is a speech by Dr. King demanding the ballot. I hope you take a moment to reflect on what our vote actually means. How important it is to our democracy.
