The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.
Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.

Of all the people I thought of tonight after this historic election result was announced, you were 1st on the list. It seems a huge debt of gratitude is owed you and the thousands who began the march in this country down the road to righteousness. I know there is much to embrace for all of us as this journey continues to evolve but I hope it is apparent that tonight was a step forward on that journey of a thousand miles, and as Lao-Tse so eloquently stated, "a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step". Looking back on our jagged history it is clear that the first step was taken some time ago, by the likes of Paul Robeson and the millions before him who lived in a country where the color of one's skin was all that some would use to defined them. I did not live the live through the times that you endured Mr. B, but please know that I so appreciate the work, time, blood and sweat you have put forth on your journey. While my thanks may not mean all that much to you, what you have done and lived means so much to me.I think your DNA is beginning to show through with the powerful work your daughter is pursuing. I feel that Gina's and my daughter, your grand daughter will have an opportunity now that is different and more profound than it was yesterday. I know Obama is not a magic bullet, I know the work really begins now with us , but I certainly know this could not have happened without you and I wanted to thank you again for the life you have lived and the choices you have made and the humanity you have shared.
Peace and lots of love
