From the fall of 2007 to February of 2009 Omar-Abdul was the program director for a series of Hip-Hop based workshops at Community Empowerment Association known as the Hip-Hop Academy that focus on developing practical skills for at risk youth ages 16-20 interested in becoming professional artists or Hip-Hop related entreprenuers. As well, Omar-Abdul is a member of the board for The Future Tenant Gallery based out of Carnegie Mellon Universities Masters in Arts Management Program. He is also a member of the Sprout Fund Seed Award Advisory Board that meets monthly to award $20,000 dollars in grant money to projects focused on raising the profile of Pittsburgh and making it more engaging for young people ages 18-35. Omar-Abdul is currently self employed as a DJ, Producer, and marketing consultant under his company www.pghmusiccutlure.com focusing on clasicc collectable african-american music and
new urban independent releases.
Omar-Abdul graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2000 and 2001 with bachelor's degrees in Africana-Studies and Music with a Jazz Arranging and composition
focus.
Throughout his studies Omar-Abdul apprenticed and interned with companies including Bayer, Rawkus Records, and Island/Def Jam Universal Music Group. Following his internships Omar-Abdul was employed by Warner Bros. Records Urban Music Department for local marketing and Radio Promotions. Before and after his work with Warner Bros. Omar-Abdul had an extensive career in community outreach in urban communities with programs funded by major foundations including the Pittsburgh Foundation and the Heinz Endowment.
During 2006 and 2007 Omar-Abdul was one of the most prolific DJ's and event promoters in the Pittsburgh area and at the same time Director of Events and Outreach for The PA League of Young Voters Pittsburgh chapter. During the last two years Omar-Abdul could be found producing, DJing and collaborating in over 100 events. Omar-Abdul has also become a sought after source for information for local newspapers authoring and consulting on over 30 stories for the Pittsburgh Courier and The City Paper over the last two years.
Omar-Abdul has also maintained a high profile in the Pittsburgh music scene being mentioned in the Post Gazette, The City Paper, the New Pittsburgh Courier, The Tribune Review, and Pittsburgh Magazine. As well, Omar-Abdul has been nominated in the 2007 and 2008 Pittsburgh Hip-Hop awards for best lyricist, mover and shaker, best mix tape DJ, best website and best journalist.
