This comprehensive account of the diverse modes, methods, and practices in social justice movements affect every organization and its constituency. Therefore, I argue that this “third” space should invite everyone to participate based on their pas...

The term sanctuary has been devalued insofar as it has been used to denote relational refuge without the notion of obligation.  Obligation to other human beings demands that through our everyday interactions we provide amnesty for those who we perceive as deviant.  The deviant (persons who are not perceived as 'normal' or engaged in 'abnormal' behavior) are those who society has deemed unworthy or not entitled to a quality of life that promotes human flourishing and moral fulfillment.

The Gospels provide a vivid account of how those who are deemed deviant from the status quo are treated (e.g., the woman caught in adultery, the woman at the well, etc.).  Consequently, if faith based organizations take seriously the Gospels account of how to treat the poor, the marginalized, the deviant (i.e. the person rendered invisible by the visible practices of racism, classism, xenophobia, etc.), then these organizations will find themselves in the trenches aggressively fighting for social justice on the ground.

I seek to partner with NGO's and faith based organizations who are in the trenches carving out and creating spaces that provide sanctuary for the deviant.

Justice on The Ground

The end goal of non/violent direct action is to employ "truth-force" as a weapon against systemic oppression. This "truth-force" allows for persons to galvanize around the Kingian Non/violent Philosophy to effect social change on a local, state, national, and international level. I believe King's philosophy is at its apex when the Black Church moves from the margins of social justice movements to the center. This formidable challenge raise the following question: Can the Black Church speak to th… Continue

Intellectual Activism

Intellectual activism embodies Antonio Gramsci's notion of the "organic" intellectual. Gramsci's notion of "organic" intellectual is predicated on the creation of educational platforms that cultivate critical self and social awareness simultaneously throught reflexive practices. For Gramsci, intellectual activism is demonstrated when the populace hold educational forums around systemic oppression and liberation.

These forums become the strategic locale where innovation of thought and practices… Continue

A Third Space

A "third" space is a space that is democratic insofar as it disallows the tyranny of a minority or majority opinion. As a result, no one idea dominates, controls, or censors another idea, but all ideas are held in creative tension to create a third dialectic. This third dialectic is neither owned nor controlled by those who occupy this space, thereby allowing for creative exchanges of convergent and divergent ideas, which leads to a comprehensive view of how social justice affects everyone on th… Continue

About

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
