Who Am I?

Peace,
My name is Kevin, but you can call me Curly X. I have lived on both sides of life. I grew up in a home that was broken, alcoholic dad, and drug addicted mom. I thank God, because both of them are doing better now, but dealing with health issues due to hard living.

When I was young I was exposed to violence, drugs and gangs in my neighborhood, Orleans Village. I’ve been around the gang lifestyle since I was 12 and joined when I was 15. Luckily, buy the grace of God; I was able to change my life, due to my family and girlfriend. I was able to be exposed to community organizing when I was about 17 years old. One of the first Elders that have taught me a new way of thinking was Juan Pacheco, from Barrios Unidos. Because of him and Barrios Unidos and ceremony, I was able to transform my mentality.

Now, I work with a group of young men and women in Virginia, called the Peace Movement For All and Barrios Unidos. I am very proud of these young courageous warriors because they have made a choice to make a difference in their lives and in there community.

One of my favorite things that I do is write poetry. Sometimes its complex and hard to understand, but if you pick up a dictionary, and look up some of the words, then you’ll understand.

Well, the last thing I want to leave with my Gathering familia, is “if peace does not reside within our hearts, then the work that we do is in vain” (Kevin Sanchez).

If you have any questions, my email is peace_movement@yahoo.com.

Peace and Love

I have been an advocate for people long before my husband. I speak up for those who have been done wrong, council them and get them where they need to be.

Hey Brother, looking at organizing a National Day of Solidarity for Alex Sanchez's Birthday. We are asking folks to do a teach in in their living rooms, churches and/or integrate this into their regular programming. I hoping that folks in DC/Virginia/Maryland can host something. I posted the information on the events and the Forum page. If you can help that would be great. Hope all is well. Peace and blessings-Carmen

I hope you got the message reply as to how you can support our brother Alex. Letters of support are being sent to his attorney's office and people are holding strategy/mobilizing meetings in their communities.

Dear Kevin,
feel free to post my spoken words (41 shots and 19 hits). As for non-violence- as a revolutionary elder i've never been able to grasp the western concept surrounding this as a strategy to some end.
I do believe in what Malcolm X said in his message to the grass roots speech, that "we are non-violent with those who are non-violent with us" and we are peaceful with those who are peaceful with us. And to not let your blood just run in the streets.- Pa' Alante-Curly Estremera

What's up Kevin, I was reading what you wrote above and I didn't know they call you Curly X. My childhood nickname is Curly C because of my curly hair and my initial. That is so funny, I went home for my birthday and my old basketball teammates still refer to me at Curly C. That's cool.

Hey brother, Thank you for your kind words. You have blessed me . I thought I would never write again after I was beaten and tortured in the restraint chair. The devil is a liar- Jesus woke me up one morning and my pen couldn't keep up with the words. That is the Kenneth Bishop piece- yes, you have my permission for the poem. We are a family and I Thank God for Strong Warriors like all of you. I have felt so alone -everyone in this state (Colorado)has wanted to act like it never happened to me - I will keep being a voice in the wilderness here in Colorado- I am from New York. Thanks for your beautiful poem - so nourishing to the soul- the spirit- In truth and love, Brooklyn

Peace brother,

Please accept my apology for the delayed response. My foundation's long term goal is to facilitate fiduciary mentorship relationships between brothers returning from prison and at risk youth in danger of entering the prison-industrial apparatus. Short term, we will be conducting community outreach efforts such as food and clothing drives, knowledge of self initiatives and the such...

About

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
