RACISM is a disease of the mind that develops a tumor of hatred that lead to the expiration of mind, body and soul!

Hi All,
Moments after I watched the historic Presidential Democratic nominee acceptance speech from Senator Barack Obama, I am overwhelmed with emotions. From beginning to end, Senator Obama spoke of a new America that we fight for every day. As he stood before America, I did not see him as a politician with good speaking skills and a schematic rhetoric to persuade the minds of Americans, I saw an agent of change who says what he means and means what he says.

This presidential campaign is historical and symbolic in so many ways, from having for the first time, a woman and a Black man run neck and neck to get the democratic nomination, to be the President of the United States of America, to Barack Obama giving his acceptance speech on the 45th Anniversary of Dr. King’s I have a Dream Speech. My friends, Obama is apart of that dream and I believe that God has called Obama to take us to the promise land that Dr. King spoke about but knew that he might not get here with us. My people of all colors and creed we are here!!!! We are on our way but we must continue to fight each day as others are too fighting to keep us enslaved and oppressed in different ways. We not only war against youth incarceration, poverty, violence, injustice, discrimination and oppression, but we as a humanity war against the disease of the mind and spirit called racism and hatred that perpetuates the vicious cycle of the wars I mentioned earlier.

After Senator Obama’s speech, a McCain supporter called in to a new channel covering the democratic convention and stated that “America is stupid to vote for a Black Socialist.” My jaw dropped in disbelief of this man’s comment but it only reminded me of this vicious war we fight against hatred. The work is not done… We have not overcome yet. So I encourage you all to keep up the good work, keep fighting in the name of justice. Keep believing that change can happen and It Will. Know that we have the same God given strength and drive to change the plagues and social dynamics of this country as the thousands of soldiers for freedom, young and old, from the Civil Rights Movement. Let’s not forget that we are all filled with greatness, and inhabit the capacity to create positive change in this world. I love you all so very much and I plead with you not to drop the baton. DON’T GIVE UP! DON’T GIVE IN. The Bible says… do not grow weary in good doing, for in due season you shall reap a harvest if you faint not. (Galatians 6:9) So I urge you brothers and sisters to keep your eyes on the prize, love and trust God and hold on. For a change is going to come and it starts with you!

Much love,

About

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
