KEEP IN MIND; OFFENDERS RETURN TO THE COMMUNITY. WHAT REHIBILITATION, EDUCATION AND SKILLS HAVE THEY RECEIVED WHILE INCARCERATED? WHAT FURTHER HELP IS NEEDED UPON RELEASE TO BECOME PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS, TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES? INCLUDING PAYING THEIR MONITARY DEBT STILL OWED TO SOCIETY IN FINES AND RESTITUTIONS AFTER RELEASE? Recidivism is around 63% in Washington State
WASHINGTON STATE DO NOT CLOSE DOWN AHTANUM VIEW CORRECTIONAL COMPLEX IN YAKIMA
Ahtanum View Correctional Center is the first in the nation of its kind. Other states have modeled correctional centers after Ahtanum View. It is for aged and disabled offenders but it also offers soon to be released offenders the opportunity to assist the aged and disabled in their daily tasks as well as taking on the responsibility of maintainance on the facility. This work of compassion, care and responsibility can and does transform ones heart and mind, and is an important lesson in life that many of these men have been void. As well, this facility has programs for offenders needing family reunification and offers support for re-entry into the community, which aid in lowering recidivism. Yakima and surrounding communities have a strong interest in AVCC and it shows with around 70 volunteers providing spiritual, cultural, family and life programs. We need this resource in our community for men coming home. They need this transformational center in their journey to becoming contributing members to their families and our community. The men dealing with disabilities and the aged must continue to receive proper care.Closing Ahtanum View will take away yet another tool necessary in saving our families and our community.
We urge you to write or email your legislator, Speaker of the House Frank Chopp and Governor Gregoire.
