Peace and Unity, Begins With COMMUNITY!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves.
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of the Creator.
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to manifest the glory of the creator that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

-Nelson Mandela's Inaugural Speech, 1994
Marianne Williamson Return of Love

I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element.
It is my personal approach that creates the climate.
It is my daily mood that makes the weather.
I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous.
I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration.
I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal.
In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or de-humanized. If we treat people as they are, we make them worse.
If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.

Johann W. Von Goethe

Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative: Reducing the unnecessary confinement of youth in our country

Although at times it may feel as though we are working alone to improve the conditions of confinement for youth, reducing racial disparities or simply creating intervention programs for youth . There are initiatives out there that are working on detention alternatives. I personally was able to get involved in my community by being a part of community committees that created alternative to incarceration programs with the support of the Santa Cruz County Probation Department and JDAI through the C… Continue

Hey Carmen
I hope you are doing well. it has been a busy summer of grass roots organizing for me in LA metro. I am sure you know about Alex Sanchez's bail hering being postponed until October. it is interesting the prison reform being debated in California legislature. Hopefully 37,000 prisoners will be released. A big press conference by LAPD chief Bratton and LA mayor Villaraigosa in South Central. Bratton wants 2,000 more cops. They are making a big push in south central with more cops and more police agencies than ever before. Iknow the areas where they want to really push like Newtown area of South Central. City of LA's answer to every problem that gangs have is more police, more jails, more police stations, more arrests and more redevelopment. City of la's government is a disgrace. Around crenshaw there are abandoned buildings, parking meters that do not work, abandoned apartment buildings, declining neighborhoods, no jobs, and demonizing inner city youth. I have been organizing in these neighborhoods this summer I know what is going on. I am working with former prisoners, former gang members and gang members in places like Watts housing projects like Jordan Downs. Back to this press conference LAPD try to compare prolbems in South Central to Iraq and Afghanistan. Just another summer in LA inner city. I hope this summer is going well for you. Good luck!

About

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
