Relatives and friends of a 17-year-old Little Rock teenager found dead in the woods are speaking out. Nikko White went missing four days before Christmas. Police say the 17-year-old was running away from officers. On December 21st, Nikko White's parents called police to pick him up at home.

He was wanted for failure to appear in juvenile court. When officers arrived, White ran behind his home into the woods. What happened after that point, that's where White's family and police differ.

"They killed my baby and I am going to sue," Nikko's mother, Lasandra Washington said. A tear-jerking moment when this mother learns police found her son dead. "They chased my baby in that wooded area."

Four days before Christmas, police say they showed up to White's home to pick him up. "When we arrived, the juvenile ran out the back door and ran into a swamp area behind the residence."

Lt. Terry Hastings says officers went after him until they couldn't anymore. "They saw the individual keep going, we continued to look for him but did not find him," he said. Wednesday, they found his body in the woods.

But White's mother doesn't believe police officer's account. "They come out to my house and chased my son like he's about to rob somebody or kill somebody. They chased Nikko. They were supposed to stop when he jumped that fence. 17 years old!"

Friends and family comforted Washington outside of her home. While the coroner’s office examines White's body his mother is already convinced something sketchy happened.

"You will pay for Nikko's funeral. You will pay for my baby's funeral.”

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - - An election night celebration resulted in what JPD officers called a "riot." On Sunday night Arkansas State University students involved in the disturbance with police spoke out.

Eight ASU students were arrested and taken into custody after the election victory party that happened at the Grove Apartments on North Caraway Road in Jonesboro.

While police called the incident a riot, ASU students said it was simply a victory party for President-elect Barack Obama, that police officers took too far. ASU students shared with Region 8 News, a picture with Officer William Brumfield from Jonesboro Police Department taken just a few moments before things took a turn for the worst.

"It wasn't a riot or anything of a threat to officers. The police officer was actually out there taking pictures with us so it was nothing like that," said student Gabriel Rice.

After the victory announcement of Barack Obama November 4th, students began cheering and citing the word ‘Obama' in the crowds. ASU students also said the celebration was non violent. They said no alcohol or rock throwing was involved.

Region 8 News was also shown phone video taken from the scene where students said the report of a female officer being assaulted was false. "You could see the officer after she kicked J. Boyd [Jeffrey Boyd] she walked to her car like nothing was wrong with her," said student Chelsea Adams.

The fate of eight college students lies in the hands of the police officers and eye witnesses at the scene of where this all took place. The NAACP ministers and other city leaders were also at the meeting.

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - - Eight ASU students wound up behind bars and three Jonesboro police officers wound up in the hospital.

That night police received a number of phone calls about an incident at the Grove. The calls ranged from everything from a riot... "Yes I live at the grove apartments and it's almost like 100 people out here I think it's a riot I would say." To calls about gun shots in the area. "Yes I'm hearing gunshots over here at the college."

Region 8 News has video taken from an ASU student showing what happened through her cell phone. Chief Yates says they are still getting conflicting reports of what happened.

"Some of the students and witnesses that are making allegations, I have offered them a chance to come file a complaint with us several times. And so far no one has come in and given us a statement or anything else," said Yates.

Monday afternoon ASU officials encouraged students who were there to come forward. "The university has gotten involved with the intent to help the students communicate some of the issues we had in a meeting last week and also with Jonesboro police chief," said Dr. Rick Stripling, Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs.

Chief Yates says knowing what happened from people that where there that night will help them weed through 9-11 calls to know if it was a celebration or a riot.

About

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
