For over 4 years, a coalition of leaders and community members of Erie, PA have met to address the rise of violence in their communities. This coalition, also instrumental in forming The Gathering for Justice in Erie, a chapter of a national movement reintroducing nonviolence as an organizing methodology, founded by Harry Belafonte, have held various events, rallies, gone door-to-door and have brought trainers from across the county to train young people in nonviolence. Today, they are requesting your support to promote nonviolence at a time when we are the most volatile. They are working hard with local and national organizations to promote a nonviolent summer and community.

Nonviolence summer will be a call for Erie to choose nonviolence and to remember the choice every community member has in creating a nonviolent community; however, it is not enough to call for a summer of positive peace. We must put tools in the hands of communities to support their exploration in choosing nonviolence.

The Gathering for Justice along with the City of Erie, Pennsylvania will be hosting week-long Level 1 Kingian Nonviolence Training for its 40 young people who attended the first 2-Day Core last year. The training will be the anchor in this kick off week and will be the catalyst for a nonviolence summer. These young people will become certified in nonviolence and continue to promote nonviolence in their communities for the summer.

Each evening a host of other trainings, workshops and events will be offered throughout the community. Evening dialogues in Nonviolence, Girl Circles/Empowerment, Man Talk, Kid’s Corner, etc, will also be offered so that families and young people can participate and engage in conversations about promoting safe communities and nonviolence.

Events such as Erie Sea Wolves Baseball Game and Praise in the Park will be hosted throughout the week and offered to families for free. Tabling will also be offered at designated locations so that families and young people can become familiar with the services that are offered throughout the city of Erie. The Gathering for Justice will also bring in national trainers and workshop facilitators to help highlight Erie and build momentum. Please come out to support the Erie Community and Pledge for Nonviolence.

Erie Family: The murder that took place last night was a very tragic event. The life of a young man in our community was lost and another ruined. The family and friends of the victim and the shooter will be changed forever. Some of us even know those that were involved. As challenging of a time as this is we cannot give up the fight. We can either give up because we see things are continuing to get worse or we can push past the difficulties and keep HOPE in front of us and keep working in this movement. Stay strong, help eachother, and keep it movin!!!!!!!!!!!

The Gathering for Justice wants to thank you all for welcoming us and joining the Gathering family. Please send me a message explaining your experience over those two days. What did nonviolence mean to you before the Kingian Nonviolence Training? What does it mean to you now? Let the world know and get them all to join the website. You can email your responses to globe808@gmail.com. Positive Peace, Globe

About

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
