The Gathering for Justice is going to be the focus of our work and community investment for 2009. Many of you have been working with us and attending the Gathering trainings, Regional gathering’s and our National Convention and we hope that the relationships we have built will continue to mature and go well beyond the see able future. This letter is being written with the intent of inviting you to an informational meeting. The meeting will be held at St. Sabina Church 1210 W. 78th Place, Chicago, IL 60620 at 2-3pm and 6:30-7:30pm in the meeting in the beasement. We will discuss the Gathering 4 month plan to provide Kingian Nonviolence training and strategic support for existing campaigns that coalition’s partners and community leaders are engaged.

The Gathering will be conducting a month full of Kingian Nonviolence trainings, opportunities for relationship/coalition building, and celebration. We have conducted 2 Kingian Nonviolence trainings in Chicago in 2008. The first training took place at St. Sabina church on May 23 & 24, 2008 and the second at Southwest Youth Collaborative on August 2 & 3, 2008 and the response was overwhelming. After completing both trainings and gathering information it was decided that would be the location where we would experiment the Kingian Nonviolence Level 1 training program being delivered Monday- Thursday from 6:00pm-9:30pm starting on January 5th, 2009- January 22, 2009. The program will empower each participate, upon completion, to present a Kingian Nonviolence 2 Day Core for there organization, church, family, or community. This program is being implemented to give support to the work already being done on the ground.

Your continued presence, commitment, and participation in this meeting, as well as, the training program so the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement gaining new energy and the Gathering growing deeper roots in the community and the hearts and minds of all involved. The Movement never died it just slowed down and now is the time to pick up the pace. We are many working in isolation it is time to focus on collaboration through nonviolent direct action to address the root causes of the violence and lack of perceived Justice.

Member organizations of The Chicago Gathering for Justice have strong campaigns that offer smart solutions to bettering Chicago. Over the past year we have trained together, created strategy together and now are ready to act together understanding how prophetic Dr. Kings words were "Either we go up together or we go down together, let us develop this type of dangerous unselfishness." As you all remember, Chicago was chosen as a national priority at our Convention in 2007. In 2009 Chicago is our tier one city, this four month training program and continual strategic and tactical support, we humbly offer the coalition you all have been a part in creating.

Positive Peace,

About

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
