It is the goal of The Gathering to bring young people from over 100 nations to come & petition the General Assembly of the UN, and declare the 21st century as the Century for Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World on September 21, 2010

Call To Action!

Use this website as a tool to help get yourself in gear for this massive and necessary project for developing nonviolence education, and a culture of peace for people throughout the world. It may seem like we're mere individuals, but with the help of each other, we have a mighty booming voice and presence. It is easy to let projects like this fall to the wayside, so let us keep that same faith and zeal we had on our first conference call, and let it escalate to pure passion and excitement. It is our role as nonviolent educators and activists to lead the forefront of this project. Dr. King taught us that when negotiations break down, direct nonviolent action is necessary in order to dramatize our most pressing issues to the greater audience, so that we are working with not just people who are involved in non-profits, but with people who may have never thought about this kind of work. Doc LaFayette says a movement cannot be successful without the sympathy, if not the active participation of the majority--that is part of our goal in gathering at least 10,000 youth from at least 150 different countries---to get the attention of the majority, and to pull them into to the attractiveness of nonviolence, so that they will want to do something about it as well. We CANNOT wait any longer. The time is NOW. Let this be a place where we stay connected, and post any suggestions that can help us spread the word, and gain participation. Comment by Robin Wildman on November 13, 2009 at 7:10pm: Today, during a discussion with my students (10 year olds) about the Birmingham movement I was asking them what Bull Connor's "truth" was (they about the Hegelian method) and one student replied that Bull Connor must have been worried about how HIS life would change if the movement was successful and segregation ended. If a ten year old can understand how to find someone else's truth, even if it is far from your own, then my own belief in the power of nonviolence is even stronger today than it was yesterday. Wish you all could have listened in on the conversation. Really, I wish I had videotaped it!

That is not anything that I disagree with. I disagree with the military focus on violent methods to achieve those means. Let us focus on the dis ease of the Major who began shooting. What was his motivations and objective?

It's ludicrous to think that violence can ever solve anything. I mourn the loss of these people, I mourn the sorrow in the shooter, all people who are taken out by force. Nonviolence is a way of life for Courageous People. A Way of Life always sticks out in my mind, a way of listening, talking, eating, behaving, caring for, standing up for, being clear with, bringing LOVE and MORE LOVE in so others may feel it too and carry it forward.

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
