Youth organizing for the 21st Centry and the presidential campaign

Hey Gathering Family-
I just got off the phone with Cynthia Palmer from the Mississippi Veterans of the Civil Rights Movement. I was asked to do 2 things, to moderate a panel on youth organizing and the 21st Century and to do a workshop on The Gathering for Justice for their annual conference in March. I was very humbled by the invite and want us to take the opportunity to produce something that expresses who we are. I would like to ask anyone who is inclined to write something (length doesnt matter) on what your thoughts are on youth organizing for the 21st Century and how our elders can support our work. We will compile all of the submissions into a book and present them to the elders. The conference is in March so we will need submissions by Feb. 1.
Thanks everyone!
Malia

Aloha from Hawaii,
We are "The People"..... We should be there to celebrate....... We elected this president...... This is our chance to reflect on what brought us to this place...... This would NOT be happening if it wasn't for the tireless work of staff and voulnteers who came up with creative ways to registered new voters...... Mr. Obama would never even be considered, if it wasn't for the blood, sweat and tears of those who came before him..... This election is our victory, it is our legacy to the youth of today and tomorrow....... We must, on an individual basis, reconnect with our young and share our hope.....
They will surprise us with their desire to learn and put into practice good citizenship. We are stewards of all the children and the planet...... Our fight is NOT over - it has just begun......

Wouldn't it be cool if we could get young kids to interview our elders, than have them write something up to post on the site? That way, the youth are interacting with the elders, and their lessons are being passed down to all of us using this 21st century tool.

A lot of people spend hours on sites like this, facebook, myspace, etc. If we can fill those mediums with stories from our elders, that'd be pretty cool.

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
