Gathering For Justice

The Gathering Report: Featured Member: PIttsburgh's "1HOOD"

Pittsburgh, PA has been on fire as late with National Conventions: The Netroots Nation Convention 2009, The AFL-CIO Conference. The NFL Kick-Off, Community benefits agreement fights, Michael Moore's Film Debut, ex-President Bill Clinton and President Obama's speeches and the G20 Summit that turned Pittsburgh into a occupied, Police State and "The Woman's Walk For Peace 2009".

The Gathering For Justice Pittsburgh LOC members of "1HOOD" have been right in the middle of the madness, participating, organizing and keeping our community informed.

Jasiri X has been moving and shaking up things with his online series of songs and videos "This Week with Jasiri X". http://www.youtube.com/user/jasirix

His latest video "What's State of The Black World?" examines who's really to blame for the death of Derrion Albert in Chicago and the innocent victims of our violent communities all around Anerica:

Music, videos and blogs/social networking are tools that 1HOOD uses to empower young people and teach them "Media Literacy". It's also a great way to combat the negative images portrayed of people of color by the mainstream media and pop-culture.

Jasiri X's work does not stop at online accomplishments, he was recently named one of the first August Wilson Center Fellows, Completed media Literacy work in Lincoln/Lemington for the Andy Warhol Museum and taught media Literacy workshops for YMCA Homewood, He also received a Thomas Merton Center New Persons Award, and participated in panels at The Net Roots Nation 2009 and a panel on Juvenile Justice at Shuman Center.

We would like to congratulate Khari Mosley, on his new position as Director of Green Economy Initiatives - GTECH, Regional Liaison - Green For All. He recently organized a successful Green The Block campaign on 9/11/2009 in the Larimer section of Pittsburgh, PA in partnership with GET:Larimer, USED, GTECH, Green For All, 1HOOD and the Hip-Hop Caucus. He is also organizing a Regional Green Jobs Task Force in the Pittsburgh area. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=110937&id=507894491&l...

Paradise Gray has been supporting a number of positive organizations and causes lately, a few of note is MAASV Martial Artists Against Street Violence, M.A.C.O.T.I. "Mothers Against Conviction Of The Innocent http://macoti.ning.com , REMP and Northside United http://www.pittsburghunited.org/campaigns/northside-united (who have been locked in a 2 year fight for a "CBA" Community Benefits Agreement" with the City Of Pittsburgh and developers). Paradise was recently falsely arrested during a protest while doing media work for Northside United, all charges were later dropped and Paradise received 50 hours of community service.

Paradise also received a Thomas Merton Center New Persons Award, and participated in panels at The Net Roots Nation 2009 alongside Jasiri X, Davey D, Rev. Yearwood and Dr. Goddess. http://www.netrootsnation.org/node/1351

Paradise Gray has long used the arts and music to educate, empower and inspire young people and is excited that One HOOD MEdia is opening a community center that will focus on teaching media literacy, the arts, chess and basic computer skills to poor and disenfranchised youth on The Northside of Pittsburgh.

Located at a storefront on 607 East Ohio Street The One HOOD Media Center will house a recording studio, a video editing suite, a photo studio and a performance space that will be used to promote unity and project a positive view of our youth. We will develop and produce a radio show, TV shows and websites to showcase intelligent, conscious and talented young people who do not fit the stereotypical thug lifestyle and are doing positive things with their lives.

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
