Gathering For Justice

How do we introduce the breakdown of our justice system during the biggest economic crisis in our history?

"History is a great teacher. Now, every one knows that the labor movement did not diminish the strength of the nation but enlarged it. By raising the living standards of millions, labor miraculously created a market for industry and lifted the whole nation to undreamed of levels of production. Those who today attack labor forget these simple truths, but history remembers them." MLK jr.

How do we introduce the breakdown of our justice system during the biggest economic crisis in our history?

As I look at the plans our regions are putting together for 2009, I see a litany of solutions for communities dealing with so much violence. Regions are creating community coalitions to create youth councils to give young people a chance to shape policy that affects them, to negotiating with the city to close a juvenile facility that has remained in violation of basic protects afforded any prisoners.

The problems that continue to plague our communities are continual. To introduce our messages will become increasingly difficult in a media space that is dominated by the economic crisis, we must find a way to continue to push the issue of incarceration and the war on our youth. We as a movement must see this as an opportunity to build bridges with the networks working to ensure that youth incarceration is seen as a piece of our countries current crisis in need of solution.

America can not solve the current economic crisis without solving the crisis of poor youth. Their futures are intertwined. Poor young people are the economic working class future of this country, if they are not working America is not working.

What is some of the information we must gather to figure out how we best fit into this larger picture. We must begin to identify people in our communities working on the community aspects of the economic crisis, unions, faith based organizations would be good places to start. By indentifying these leaders we can begin a conversation about who we are and what we the youth movement we have been building over the past 4 years.

We must also be diligent about our research into what opportunities being offered to us in the way of training and jobs. It is our tenacity that will ensure we are not passed over as our country gets back to work.

We have been building relationships with one another, training together and planning together to coordinate a movement that America will have to respond to. We understand that the school to prison pipeline expresses a moral low of this country and commands young poor people to a life of incarceration. We must look for entry points in our current dialogue to ensure that the on going issues of our youth are at the table. Lets begin to learn about the economic crisis and what our government is doing about it, and participate in our piece of it, fighting for to the moral outrage of child incarceration.

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
