The Gathering For Justice

Jonathan Lewis

Did you hear what happened around the country on January 14, 2009?

On January 14th, 2009, at last count, there were 11 Gathering locations participating in the National day of Solidarity & Healing in response to the murder of Oscar Grant and fueled by a long law enforcement history of violent acts against the community. Yesterday's 11 demonstrations across the country were a clear representation of the heightening national demand for changes in law enforcement.

Participants from any of yesterday's peaceful demonstrations for Oscar Grant please start a forum, post the event outcomes as a blog and summarize the group discussion so we can create a national understanding of the pain and the promise that people feel. If you were not able to facilitate a discussion or event you can still participate in this process of raising the level of interconnectedness that we all share. For example, call the Gathering local contact person for each event and interview them and post the discussion on the website. The web discussions can be used as an education tool for many forums, including educating our community through discussing national perspectives of injustice.

The Gathering for Justice Network is made up of thousands of people nationally and internationally, however the website does not show that in membership. We must increase our profiles and activity on the website. These profiles will assist all of us in providing national awareness and support for the work that we are all doing. In addition the profiles will give us a national platform for model exchanges and strategic planning. On the ground from coast to coast we can organize. I challenge us all to increase our internet organizing ability. More People! More Power! More Progress! By the way 661 is the number of members we have currently on the Gathering for Justice Website. I look forward to reading about the Movement we call the Gathering for Justice.

"Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outsider agitator" idea. Anyone who lives in the United Stats can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds."

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
