Greetings Columbus Community Member:
You are cordially invited to attend an informational community meeting with the Columbus Gathering. The Columbus Gathering will be highlighting the efforts of the National Gathering for Justice locally here in Columbus this Sunday, September 27th at 99 N. Monroe Ave. The meeting will begin at 6:30pm.
The Gathering for Justice is a civil rights organization dedicated to building a national movement to end child incarceration and address social unrest through direct action using nonviolent means. We were founded on August 29, 2005 by Mr. Harry Belafonte and Elders of our past civil rights movements after Mr. Belafonte saw a news clip of five year old Jaisha Scott being handcuffed in school by 4 cops for being unruly in class. The sight of a five year old child being arrested, rather than being handled by school counselors and community, sickened Mr. Belafonte and other elders who have fought long and hard for justice and freedom.
Since The Gathering for Justice’s inception in 2005, members of the Columbus, Ohio community have participated in various events across the country sponsored by the Gathering. "The Gathering" as it is referred to by many, is regionally represented but the agenda, although quite specific in the debate on local issues, focuses on its national potential. Leaders committed to the Gathering are community rooted and will remain that way but a national solidarity movement is their main objective. The Gathering is their answer for the need of a coordinated body that will feed the soul of the movement.
In November of 2007, a delegation of youth and adult allies from Columbus participated in the Gathering's National Convention in Oakland, CA. In May of 2008, the Gathering conducted its first Two Day Kingian Nonviolence Training in Columbus at New Harvest Urban Arts Center. Youth and adult allies from SIMBA, Street Workers, S.O.S. (Second Opportunity for Success), African American Male Initiative, and The African Development Shop all participated in the Two Day Core. Several leaders emerged as a result of the 2008 training and an urban garden in the North Linden area was developed. While in Columbus, the Gathering's National Staff were introduced firsthand at the potential of this community and the people's commitment to rebuild the community's moral through Rites of Passage, Urban Gardening, and positive social gatherings.
During a strategic planning process, the Gathering created a set of criteria to choose 4 regions in which we, the Gathering for Justice, would target in 2009, to give additional capacity to explore the application of nonviolence to local campaigns. In February of 2009, Columbus was selected as one of the four cities based on organizing staff ability, issue agenda, and a commitment to nonviolence. Since February of 2009, the Columbus Gathering leadership has participated in ongoing weekly conference calls with the Gathering's National Staff. The Gathering for Justice National Organizing Director, Carmen Perez, along with Gus Newport, Gathering Elder and Community Activist traveled to Columbus on two separate occasions to perform an on the ground and organizational assessment. On Tuesday, September 8th, The Gathering’s Executive Director, Malia Lazu accompanied by Carmen Perez, took the Columbus Gathering Leadership team through a strategic planning session to develop the Columbus Plan.
Locally in Columbus, the Gathering for Justice wants to utilize the census work to build up and strengthen the Columbus Gathering base. The Columbus Gathering will expose individuals to cutting edge organizing theory and the application of nonviolent direct action. We believe everyone can serve and in order to support a decentralized nonviolent direct action movement for the long haul, we must continually involve new voices, new styles, especially new community leaders. The Columbus Gathering is seeking to expand its leadership and create opportunities for leadership development by creating committees to assist our efforts. If there are any questions, please email Brother Haatim at ha2timgyenyame@gmail.com and/or Brother Devin at dj2978@gmail.com. Thank you for your interest, we look forward to seeing you at our community meeting.
In spirit,
The Columbus Gathering
