The Gathering For Justice

This call is focusing on the day of solidarity being planned for Wed. Jan 14th.

The goals for this call are: introduce ourselves to one another, get an update from CAPE on what is happening in Oakland, figure out what support we can give to Oakland as well as what folks want to do in their local areas.

The agenda is below:

1) Introductions- Who are you, what organization do you represent.

2) Update from the Bay:

3) Update on what each organization on the call is talking about doing nationally or in Oakland.

4) Update from national organizations: is there a national call for something we may want to do?

We are a vulnerable population. We are having the greatest asset loss of homes in our communities. We are losing homes and the robbers are gaining those assets. What is happening to us is capitalism and its institutions are falling. Municipal governments will not be able to provide for us and all agencies will contine to respond to us unfavorably. The similar killing and response to Sean Bell and Oscar Grant III has called for action and response. There is a national day of reflection coming up - MLK Day.
Now on January 19th, President Elect Barack Obama and Michelle Obama asks that all will join thousands of people across the country for an extraordinary day of service. So putting all this together to
CAN ALL HELP KING DAY
We must take action to stop the police murders of our people.
We must use the media to our advantage.
We need to somehow highlight what has been exposed as police state conditions as it relates to our people AND police murders of our people.
We need to call attention to Dr. King's statements against violence against the Black Man, social and economic justice and not just the "I Have A Dream" passage.

i.e. there be pickets with posters outside of wherever CITY HALL'S KING DAY events occur calling attention to Dr. King's statements against violence,

BOYCOTT CITY HALL PLANS FOR MLK DAY by not going to CITY HALL EVENTS. SEND A RSVP: " I WILL NOT BE IN ATTENDANCE"

The action I am calling for is to urge all to:
NOT ATTEND ANY City Hall's official organized celebrations of MLK Day". Please send an RSVP to NYC Mayor Bloomberg and alike: "WE WILL NOT BE IN ATTENDANCE"
NO SHOPPING ON THAT DAY. Put nothing in the coffers of City taxes
Stand as Martin would, in a protest at Police stations, or Jails, or Prisons or Courthouses.
Or make it a Day of Community Volunteerism and work in Our Community practicing the the principal of KUUMBA . "To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it."

I am in no way calling for a Boycott of King Day. Only a boycott of attending City Hall organized celebrations. I am asking for King Day to be celebrated and organized in our community and not with murderers such as Ray Kelly of NYPD on the stage.

We must take action to stop the police murders of our people.

The Gathering’s Mission

The mission of The Gathering is to build an Intergenerational, movement, rooted in history, cultures and non-violent direct action to heal communities, build collective strength and generate an environment of hope and opportunity.

Civil rights and social justice organizations have come to understand that collective action on a national basis is required to stop child incarceration and challenge the immoral process which perpetuates an unjust justice system. These groups are working under extremely difficult circumstances and many of them with little or no resources. The Gathering is a national movement that creates a coordinated space to 1) fortify relationships between regional groups, 2) support local endeavors and 3) enhance the ongoing organizing of non-violent direct action training. Central to its mission is strengthening our moral environment.
